During 1987, the business people of Gansbaai met and decided that something needed to be done for the very poor local community to show their gratitude and share their blessed life with the community. The local Lions Club was subsequently founded in September of that year with an initial 21 members under the leadership of the first president, Mr J Rademeyer. The aim was, and still is, to not only relief poverty but also to contribute to the upliftment of the community in general.
The then Gansbaai Municipality allocated some land opposite the Police Station, next to the shooting range, to the club where members build a clubhouse themselves from donations and self-funding. Plans to build a large community hall were however scuppered due to a lack of funds and development was stopped after the completion of Phase One, consisting of a meeting hall, kitchen, storeroom and toilets. These facilities are still being used today.
For the last sixteen years, the club have been running two major fundraisers annually, namely the Danger Point Half Marathon on the 31st December every year and the two day Lighthouse To Lighthouse Mountain Bike race, which in 2017 have moved to the month of April. These two events contribute thousands of Rands not only to the Gansbaai community but also to the surrounding areas.
